Imagine: You’ve finished editing the manuscript, gotten it through the peer review process, and been approved for publication. But now there’s just one problem—the journal editors have informed you that you must produce a graphical abstract before the article goes to press. If this scenario sounds daunting, you are not alone! In response to our increasingly visual and digitized culture, many of the most prestigious medical and health research journals now require graphical abstracts that can be used to promote their publications on social media. However, most medical writers are not experienced graphic designers. To help bridge this gap, this session will cover the process of translating a standard abstract into an effective graphical abstract that is both attention-grabbing and informative. We will go step-by-step from the brainstorming process to the design phase while addressing both conceptual and technical considerations and challenges. During the session, you will get to create your own graphical abstract and practice giving and receiving feedback. No experience with art or graphic design is required.
Instructors: Heather Duncan, MPH and S. Patrick Murphy, PhD
